Integrated energy performance of an innovative translucent photoluminescent building envelope for lighting energy storage

Novel, photoluminescent and translucent construction elements are considered for application on buildings’ envelope toward energy savings avant-garde architectural expression. These allow natural light to pass through the charge materials, which their turn re-emit as visible light. By exploiting intrinsic characteristics of these large amounts could be saved in lighting applications. This work tackles complex, dynamic behavior materials by means a novel, experimental numerical methodology. Materials’ firstly investigated an in-lab campaign. Secondly, coupled simulations carried out. Results show that components able reduce up 40% building electricity consumption annual basis depending urban surroundings. In best-case scenario, i.e. during longest day year, obtained around 80% photoluminescent–translucent envelope.
